Gardeners Barnehurst is committed to maintaining the highest practicable standards of health, safety and welfare for our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety in all locations where we operate.

Policy Statement and Objectives

Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, and property damage arising from our work. We will identify, assess and control risks associated with gardening, landscaping, grounds maintenance and related services. Health and safety will be considered in all planning and operational decisions, and will carry the same priority as quality, customer service and environmental performance.

This policy applies to all staff, subcontractors, temporary workers and others engaged by Gardeners Barnehurst, wherever they are working. We expect everyone representing the company to comply with this policy and associated procedures at all times.

Management Responsibilities

Management is responsible for implementing and reviewing this policy. This includes:

Setting clear health and safety standards and ensuring they are communicated and understood. Providing and maintaining safe systems of work, safe equipment and suitable welfare facilities. Ensuring that appropriate risk assessments are carried out and reviewed regularly. Providing adequate training, information, instruction and supervision. Investigating accidents, incidents and near misses, and implementing corrective actions. Allocating sufficient resources to support effective health and safety management.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees and persons working on behalf of Gardeners Barnehurst have a duty to:

Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Follow company safety procedures, instructions and training at all times. Use equipment, tools and personal protective equipment correctly and report any defects immediately. Report accidents, incidents, hazards and near misses as soon as practicable. Co-operate fully with management in meeting health and safety requirements.

Risk Assessment and Planning

Before starting work at any site, appropriate risk assessments will be completed or reviewed. These assessments will consider typical gardening and grounds maintenance hazards, including but not limited to:

Use of powered and hand tools. Working with soils, plants, mulches and aggregates. Manual handling of equipment, green waste and materials. Slips, trips and falls on uneven, wet or obstructed ground. Working near roads, driveways and access points. Noise, vibration and exposure to weather conditions. Use, storage and handling of fuels, fertilizers and other substances.

Control measures arising from risk assessments will be communicated to all relevant personnel and will be implemented as part of the method of work for each job.

Safe Use of Tools, Machinery and Substances

All machinery and tools used by Gardeners Barnehurst will be suitable for the tasks undertaken, properly maintained and inspected at appropriate intervals. Only trained and authorised personnel will operate powered equipment such as mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, blowers and similar machinery.

Where substances such as fuels, oils, fertilizers or garden chemicals are used, we will ensure that suitable information, instructions and control measures are in place. Storage and use will follow manufacturer guidance and relevant safety data. The use of hazardous substances will be minimised wherever reasonably practicable, and safer alternatives will be used when available and suitable.

Personal Protective Equipment

Gardeners Barnehurst will provide appropriate personal protective equipment for tasks where risks cannot be fully controlled by other means. This may include protective footwear, gloves, eye and ear protection, high visibility garments and weather-appropriate clothing.

All personnel are required to use the protective equipment provided, keep it in good condition and report any loss or damage so that it can be replaced without delay.

Manual Handling and Ergonomics

Many gardening activities involve lifting, carrying and repetitive movements. We will assess manual handling tasks and adopt safe working techniques, using mechanical aids or team lifting where appropriate to reduce the risk of strains and injuries.

Staff will be trained in safe lifting methods and encouraged to work at a sensible pace, taking reasonable breaks and rotating tasks where possible to reduce repetitive strain.

Public, Client and Property Safety

We will take reasonable steps to protect clients, visitors, neighbours and the general public from risks arising from our operations. This includes:

Planning vehicle movements and parking to minimise obstruction and risk. Using barriers, signs or other controls where work may create hazards, such as debris or machinery operation. Keeping work areas as tidy as reasonably practicable to avoid trips and other hazards. Taking particular care in residential gardens, shared spaces and areas with children, pets or vulnerable individuals.

We will respect client property, avoid unnecessary disturbance and ensure waste and materials are handled and removed safely.

Training, Competence and Supervision

Gardeners Barnehurst will provide suitable induction and on-the-job training for all staff, covering site rules, safe use of tools, manual handling, use of personal protective equipment and emergency procedures. Additional training will be provided where specialised equipment or higher-risk work is involved.

Work will be supervised to an appropriate level taking into account the experience, training and capabilities of the individuals involved. No one will be asked to undertake tasks for which they are not competent.

Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work-related ill health must be reported promptly. We will record and review these events in order to identify trends and implement improvements.

Emergency arrangements, including first aid provision and contact procedures, will be established for each work site. Staff will familiarise themselves with these arrangements at the start of each job and follow them in the event of an incident.
